This message to members of the University community is being sent in the interest of public safety and in compliance with federal law requiring timely warning notification of crimes committed on or near campus.

On 9/28/09 at 12:00 a.m., Seattle Police responded to a call of an armed robbery at 18th Ave. N.E. and N.E. 45th St. The victim, a UW student, stated that an unknown assailant approached him from behind, put a knife to his throat, and demanded his wallet. The assailant took the victim's wallet and ran off.

The victim followed the suspect briefly and gave the suspect's description to 911. Officers arrived, conducted a search of the area and located the suspect in the 4500 block of University Way, N.E. The suspect ran from the officers but after a brief chase was captured in the alley east of the 4500 block of University Way, N.E. The victim positively identified the suspect at the arrest location and his wallet was recovered where the suspect had dropped it.

This case is being investigated by Seattle Police Department, under case number 2009 - 342564.

Prevention tips for incidents such as this:

* Avoid confrontations with suspects if possible.
* Be aware of your environment and alert for possible danger.
* Remove yourself from potentially dangerous situations as soon as possible.
* Call 911 to report suspicious activity or persons to the police.
