[UW Safety] Notification of Criminal Incidents - Seattle Campus

This message is being sent to all Faculty, Staff, and Students with the approval of the UW Police Department.

Notification of Criminal Incidents - SEATTLE CAMPUS
12/08/09 - Armed Robbery / Strong Armed Robberies

This message to members of the University community is being sent in the interest of public safety and in compliance with federal law requiring timely warning notification of crimes committed on or near campus.

On Tuesday December 8, 2009 there were four incidents in the University District.

1) At approximately 12:30 a.m., three males in their 20's wearing dark clothing approached a man in the 4700 block of Brooklyn Ave., N.E. near the Safeway store. The suspects implied they had a gun, took the victim's wallet and fled northbound in a silver vehicle. The victim sustained no injuries. The case is being investigated by the Seattle Police Department under case # 09-423017.

2) At approximately 5:15 p.m., a female student waiting at a bus stop at University Way, N.E. and N.E. 42nd Street was checking the bus schedule on her iPhone when a male suspect slapped it from her hand, picked it up, and fled on foot in a southerly direction with two other males. The victim was not injured in this incident. This case is being investigated by the Seattle Police Department under case # 09-423591.

3) At approximately 5:50 p.m., a male suspect robbed the Wells Fargo bank at N.E. 45th Street and University Way, N.E. The suspect displayed a handgun and after obtaining an unknown amount of money, fled the bank in the direction of University Way, N.E. This case is being investigated by the Seattle Police Department under case # 09-423628.

4) At approximately 9:00 p.m., a male student walking in the vicinity of Hutchinson Hall on the Seattle campus was approached by two male suspects. One of the suspects struck the victim with his fist and stole his jacket. The victim was not seriously injured. The suspects then fled on foot toward N.E. 45th Street. This incident is being investigated by the University of Washington Police Department under incident number 09-002390.

In all incidents officers conducted an area check but found nothing. Evidence does not suggest that any of the incidents are linked to one another. Prevention tips for incidents such as this:

- Call 911 to report suspicious activity or persons to the police.
- Avoid confrontations with suspects if possible.
- Be aware of your environment and alert for possible danger.
- Remove yourself from potentially dangerous situations as soon as possible.
- Walk in groups whenever possible.

On Thursday December 3, 2009 at approximately 7:15 p.m., an armed robbery occurred at the Mrs. Cook's Store in University Village. The male suspect was armed with a small semi-automatic handgun and left the area heading westbound on N.E. 45th Street. The suspect was described as in his mid 20's, 6-feet tall, with a mustache and beard. He was wearing a tan-colored knit hat with a snowflake pattern and tan zippered jacket. There were no injuries in the incident.

Officers conducted an area check but found nothing. This incident is being investigated by the Seattle Police Department under incident number 09-418651. Anyone having additional information regarding this case is asked to call the Seattle Police Department at 206-625-5011.
